Deformity correction surgery:  a contrast of resource rich vs resource poor environments

Most of us are accustomed to having the equipment we need to take care of our trauma patients – imaging, sophisticated implants, external fixation and even vascular repair.  This is in stark contrast to developing regions where surgeons often achieve outstanding results using far less sophisticated equipment.  We will discuss the differences in these two situations and the particular challenges facing surgeons in resource poor environments, for both acute trauma, as well as late presenting traumatic deformity.  We anticipate several interesting case presentations and vigorous audience participation.

Don’t panic! Multiple Trauma and Disaster Preparedness in Pediatric Orthopedics

Time: 13:00-14:00
Room: Plenary room: Concorde 1+2 (Level -1)

Trauma is almost synonymous with orthopedics, yet most of our trauma cases are single bone, often low energy. With the expansion of pediatric trauma centers, more high energy and multisystem trauma is coming to our institutions.  This session will explore how pediatric major trauma differs from adult, our role on the trauma team, and, with many case examples, thoughts about triage, operative, planning, and reconstruction.  All are encouraged to participate as we discuss these challenging scenarios.

  • Marta Salom, M.D. Head of the Pediatric Orthopedics Unit. University and Polytechnic Hospital La Fe. Valencia, Spain
  • Eric W Edmonds, MD, FAOA. Professor of Clinical Orthopaedic Surgery. Director, 360 Sports Medicine. University of California, San Diego
